FEATURED PROJECT: The Dalles US197
PROJECT OVERVIEW
US Route 197 crosses the Columbia River at the Oregon and Washington border at The Dalles, Oregon. The Dalles Bridge is a steel-truss-cantilever bridge which was constructed in 1953, and in the early 2020’s, underwent a $41 million retrofit to replace the failing bridge deck.
Thompson Metal Fab supplied the following in support of this project:
- Span 1 & 2 steel
- Diaphragms and Formed Connection Plates
- Stringers: Span 3-1 to 7-2, with Formed Connection Plates
- Floorbeams: Bent 8 to Hinge 12 with WT Connection Brackets
- Diaphragms: Hinge 12 to Hinge 28 with Formed Connection Brackets
- Floorbeams: Hinge 28 to Bent 30 with WT Connection Brackets
- Diaphragms: Bent 30 to Bent 31 with Bent Connection Plates
- 5 Sets Soles/Bearing Plates
- Drain Grates, quantity 10
PROJECT HIGHLIGHT
• All structures were sandblasted and prime-coated at TMF facility.
• This was one of the biggest retrofit projects in TMF’s history, behind only the Gerald Desmond Bridge in Long Beach, California and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California.
• The structures were progressively manufactured in ‘lot deliveries’ mirroring the field construction plan.
