FEATURED PROJECT: AGP Shiploader Repair

AGP’s shiploader, which is used for loading grain, suffered a mechanical failure which led to structural damage in the boom and portal frame. KPFF in Seattle, WA was hired by the owner to determine what parts of the shiploader were unharmed, which parts required repair, and which parts required full replacement. Rognlin’s Inc. in Aberdeen, WA was brought on by the owner for all on-site disassembly and other field repairs.

Thompson Metal Fab’s primary scope was shop fabrication, in addition to design/assist services and on-site field survey which the engineer used to help determine the extent of damage and type of repair needed. TMF also performed a quality inspection of parts that were intended for re-use. Parts that could not pass visual inspection or weld NDE were repaired/replaced by TMF.

In addition to other structures, a new boom was fabricated for the shiploader which incorporated value engineered solutions introduced by TMF.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

-The new boom is 123’ long x 15’ wide x 8’ high, weighs approximately 75,000 lbs, and was delivered in one piece to the jobsite.

-Conveyor systems were installed in the field.

-All work was performed per AWS D1.1 and AISC code.

-Actual fabrication time on this project was 2 months.
