FEATURED PROJECT: Congressman Earl Blumenauer Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge
Congressman Earl Blumenauer Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge
The Earl Blumenauer Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge (originally named Sullivan’s Crossing) spans over I-84 near downtown Portland, OR. This was a CM/GC contract for the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) who ultimately hired KPFF for the engineering and paired them with HP Civil, a local general contractor. HP Civil’s scope included all scope management/interface, earthwork, and supply/erection of the bridge.
Thompson Metal Fab fabricated the arches, the spandrels (arch supports which connect to the deck), and the deck steel. All fabricated components were progressively fit-verified in our shop and painted by our on-site coatings department and other local sub-contractors. This bridge is set to open in spring/summer 2021.
Highlights
-The arches are made from 36” diameter pipe. Due to limited local capacity, the pipe was rolled at facilities in California and Canada.
-The bridge is 475 feet long and 24 feet wide.
-The bridge deck consists of two pathways, one for pedestrians and one for bicycles. The pedestrian pathway is 10 feet wide and the two bike lanes are 7 feet wide each, for the total 24-foot width.
-A slight kink was designed and built into the floor beams for water runoff.
