FEATURED PROJECT: Gilman Street Pedestrian Bridge
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Thompson Metal Fab fabricated the arch for California’s Gilman Street Pedestrian Bridge, a total span of over 200 feet. The arches are symmetrical and have a unique shape that curves in and then fans back out across the length of the span.
The concrete bridge deck is held up by the cable tied steel arch. The fabrication on this project required extreme precision due to the complex geometry where the cable attachment knifes through the main arch pipe. The penetration points for these attachment plates were surveyed-in using a total station.
The bridge was delivered to the field in six total segments and erected in the field by the General Contractor.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS:
- Total weight 130,000 pounds
- Main arch was 30-inch diameter rolled pipe
- The total length of the steel was 212 feet
- The project adhered to the specifications of the Buy Clean California Act
- TMF painted the arches with shop primer in our in-house coatings department, finish coats done on site by other subcontractors
