FEATURED PROJECT: Innovation (HAK 2) Arctic Drilling Rig
Thompson Metal Fab received the contract to build Hilcorp’s HAK Rig #2, aka, ‘Innovation.’ The rig consists of a 500 kip telescoping Mast, ‘box on box’ substructure, dual moving system (by 3rd party), and (21) individual modules which make up the (3) separate complexes for Power, Mud and Pipe. In total, the structural weight of this project is near 1.5 Million pounds, a fair amount of which required the use of low-temperature rated (-40F CVN) materials.
After completion of fabrication and paint, the modules were “rigged-up” (assembled) in our shop, including the installation of major equipment. Thanks to the height of our facility and bridge-crane capability, we were able to accommodate a full-build up to the drill floor (approximately 36’ H). Ultimately, an overall build height of 50’ was accommodated inside of our facility, allowing the Contractor to work inside of a climate controlled space. As large modules were completed in this manner, they were mobilized to our adjacent rig-up yard with use of heavy-duty transportation dollies. In our yard, all structures were test assembled, disassembled and rolled onto a barge for delivery.
