FEATURED PROJECT: McNary Dam Spillway Weir Closure Leaves
PROJECT OVERVIEW
This was a supply contract for two Spillway Weir Closure Leaves at McNary Dam. Each structure is approximately 53’-0” W x 18’-6” H x 5’-0” D, weighing about 135,000lbs each.
The Closure Leaves are a ‘wheeled’ structure where the wheels are side mounted and allow the structures to travel vertically through the guides. The wheels are made from ASTM A504 Class C; a grade of steel often used for locomotive or rail car wheels.
Rubber seals along the sides and bottom of each surface allow for water to be held back and retained. Seal surfaces are stainless steel and milled for flatness so to ensure the seal is flat when installed.
An integrated, mechanical latching system connects the closure leaves to mating structures. The latching system consists of multiple, custom machined parts which are manufactured independently and then assembled in the shop. To satisfy testing requirements, the latching system will be installed during fabrication and verified. Upon approval, it will be removed so the closure leaves can be painted (also by TMF) and then re-installed before delivery.
