Montague Expressway Pedestrian Overcrossing

Thompson Metal Fab in Vancouver WA fabricated the Montague Expressway Pedestrian Overcrossing for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority in Milpitas CA. The structure was manufactured in 3 large segments and shipped to the site via heavy haul contractor in a unique trailering configuration. The team developed a cradle that held the trailer in the middle of the bridge segments rather than traditional shipping with the project sitting atop the trailer.

Once on site, the three segments of the overcrossing were put together and then picked up and installed onto the concrete piers across the roadway. Our total scope of work included the overcrossing, the North Landing, and the elevator steel.

The overcrossing was built to connect the transportation center to a residential area on the other side of the highway. The architect only wanted 2 concrete support piers which would require a free-floating span across the highway. The structure was manufactured to be extremely strong to support that open span.

• Overall size: 226 feet long, 14 feet wide, 15 feet 8 inches tall
• Segment 1: 69’ 10” | Segment 2: 81’ 4” | Segment 3: 74’ 10”
• This project adhered to the Buy America requirements – all materials and labor were domestic. Melted and manufactured in the USA.
• The overcrossing was manufactured to the AWS D1.5 bridge code
• The elevator and North Landing were manufactured to AWS D1.1 code
• Each HSS Bridge Chord was 12 inches x 12 inches x 5/8-inch thick
• Bolted splice connections were complex joints, primarily CJP welding
