FEATURED PROJECT: Wirtz Dam Radial Gates
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Thompson Metal Fab is replacing 5 of the 10 radial gates (specifically, those in slots 6 through 10) for Wirtz Dam in Horseshoe Bay, Texas. These radial gates act as a flood control system. As the water level rises, the gates can be adjusted to increase or decrease the water flow, allowing for management of the water level in the reservoir.
Our scope of work includes: Tainter Gate Fabrication (Skin Plate, Skin Plate Frame, & Arms), Trunnion Hubs, Pins & Yoke Assemblies, Seal Assemblies w/ Seals, Guide Wheel Assemblies, Temporary Trunnion Tie Assemblies, Trunnion Girder Cover Plates.
The first picture in the slideshow depicts one gate during fit-verification. Each gate is fabricated with 4 skin plates along the front. Here, you can see two of the four skin plates attached to the gate frame. Behind the skin plates, there are 3 girders which act as bracing and attachment points for the outside end frames. The yoke will be anchored to the dam, and pin will connect the end frames to the yoke. This connection will allow the gates to swing open and close.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS:
- Weight for each completed gate is 150,000 pounds
- Gates are 40’ deep from the back of the end frame to face of the gate
- Gates are 50’ wide and 30’ tall
